Week of January 20: Priorities

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Mark 12: 41-44

Towards the beginning of last semester, I had a meeting with a woman that I look up to greatly. She asked me how I was doing and I replied, “I am so busy!” Immediately, she fired a question back at me that changed the way I look at my schedule, “Are you busy or have you not been prioritizing what’s important?” Ouch… I know sometimes in college we truly are busy when we have class 8:00 to 12:00 then you have to go work all afternoon followed by a sorority meeting or another extracurricular activity and then you get back to your apartment at 9:00 and you still haven’t eaten supper and somedays maybe even lunch. Unfortunately, that is life, but if we want to grow in our faith we have to prioritize it with our body, mind, and spirit. This is a lesson that I need to continue to tell myself because on Sunday morning it is easier to stay in bed, eat a late brunch, start working on homework and skip church. It’s easier to make excuses to not find a Bible study or skip your nightly devotion. The poor widow gave everything she had because tithing to the temple was a priority for her. How much can we give to our souls and to our God when we prioritize?
